DURBAN – TELKOM said yesterday that it observed that Internet usage is generally skewed in favor of web browsing and streaming services, regardless of the time of day.

Telkom Group Manager for Mobile Network, Hugo Van Zyl, said, however, that, as you might expect, services like Microsoft Teams and Zoom were used around nine times more during the day than at night.

“Despite heavy usage of streaming services throughout the day, usage is slightly higher (10-20%) at night. Messaging and social media services are around 20-30% higher during the day than at night, ”Van Zyl said.

In the first six months after South Africa’s lockdown last year, Telkom said it saw an 80% increase in year-over-year data consumption compared to the same period in 2019.

The group said it had declined slightly since then, but the “new normal” of increased work and home schooling had supported these high volumes of data use.

Van Zyl said the use of data for online shopping has also increased significantly since the first lockdown. Streaming, web browsing, social network services (SNS) and instant messaging (IM) are said to be the main drivers of traffic on the network.

Telkom said its decision to invest in infrastructure ahead of demand turned out to be the right move and enabled the group to meet the surging demand for broadband services.

Its network performance improved, showing a 16% increase in downlink, 44% increase in uplink, and 35% improvement in latency during and beyond the various stages of the lockdown.

Van Zyl said a deliberate investment in deploying temporary spectrum wherever possible has significantly contributed to these improvements.

“We have continued to expand our network, increasing the number of new sites and thereby increasing the percentage of LTE / LTE-A technology in the network, with an increase of over 20% for LTE-A. We continue to focus on fiber-powered mobile. sites, balancing the need for speed of execution with future backhaul needs. “

Meanwhile, Cell C chief technology officer Schalk Visser said Cell C saw more data traffic during the 7pm to 7am night time period than during the corresponding daylight period.

“While all of our top-used services have more nighttime traffic than daytime traffic, the services that show the biggest percentage differences are streaming entertainment services like Netflix. Social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook are also showing more widespread use at night. . Among the most used services, WhatsApp has the most evenly distributed traffic pattern, ”said Visser.

Cell C said it was confident it had the capacity available to meet the growing demand for traffic for data and voice services.

South Africa’s Independent Communications Authority last month said high-demand spectrum licensing would continue as planned, unless a court order is made to delay or stop the process. .
